WHAT
IS AN ARCHITECT?
Architects
by definition are qualified and duly licensed to design
buildings for the public. Their job is to protect the
welfare and safety of the public at large while designing
functional facilities that add to the surrounding environment.
What do Architects do?
Architects starts by helping the
client develop the appropriate program (owners needs
of the building). Next the site the building is intended
to be built on needs to be investigated to ensure the
building can be built on the proposed site. The architect
assists the owner in coordinating with a surveyor, geo-technical,
government agencies and others. After the data is received
the architect interprets the data that is received and
assist the owner with gaining any final approvals such
as a change in zoning. While the investigation is underway,
the architect starts his preliminary design. Once the
design is approved by the owner, the architect assembles
his team. Due to the complexity of modern buildings, architects
operate much like the quarterback of a football team.
Their job is not to just program and design a functional
facility but to also oversee a team of specialist. These
specialists include but are not limited to:
Civil Engineer
Structural Engineer
Mechanical Engineer
Electrical Engineer
Plumbing Engineer
Interior Designer
Other specialist might include:
Kitchen specialist
Sound specialist
Roofing specialist
Etc.

When the construction documents and specifications are
developed the architect usually assist the owner in selecting
a contractor. Once the contractor starts work, the architect
makes periodic site visits to verify the facility is being
constructed according to construction documents and verify
the contractor's pay request. While this is only one of
many different ways a facility could possibly be constructed
and there are many other services architects typically
perform, the architects basic job always remains the same
to act as the owners representative and designer to ensure
the final product meets or exceeds the owner's expectations.
When a building is properly designed it should be attractive,
energy efficient, accessible to the handicap, and function
to make the jobs of those within it's walls easier while
providing a stimulating environment.
